1. Unconscious incompetence or the stage of not knowing:
We are unaware of what needs or could change - Ignorance is bliss
2. Conscious incompetence or the stage of knowing
We are exposed to some new information, possibility or potential within or without that challenges our current understanding, beliefs or values
3. Conscious competence or the stage of doing
We engage in the learning process to deepen our understanding of this new knowledge. This can be driven by a desire to prove this new insight false or a passion to discover more. Either way during this stage we need to remain open minded, curious and persistent. We have to deepen our understanding through repetition, reflection and renewed action.
4. Unconscious competence or the stage of being
We have understood, applied and repeated our actions so often that what was a new thought or challenging belief becomes part of who we are. In short we have changed or reinforced a habit.
You can see this simple process of change and transformation on a daily basis. Back to the power of really embracing learning line.
So, why so difficult to master? Insecurity...fear...other people’s response to our new understanding? Perhaps also the simple fact that there is no final destination. There are only stations to rest and reflect along the way and the way is a repetition of not knowing, knowing, doing and being. Being ok with this is part of the journey, and a release into a lifetime of learning.
"If you know but do not do, you do not know".
