In the book I write:
"I have spent the last 20 years of my life working in schools with young people, their teachers, their school leaders, their parents and their communities. I use the same ideas with children in reception or Year 11 that I use with the executives I coach or the business teams I train. Human beings aren’t so complicated, not really"
This point – human being aren’t so complicated - gives me great encouragement that we can each affect change for ourselves and for the world around us. For me this is as pertinent in the classrooms where I work as in the boardrooms. But beyond too - where the world attempts to deal with challenges around conflict, climate change and democracy this principle can help us see ourselves as part of the solution, even if remotely and over a long period of time.
In There Is Another Way I introduce people to the potential for the Butterfly Model as I know it is a powerful tool. Ironically not a complicated one despite its potential for each of us. This is about step, by step, making a change. I like to keep things simple as possible but no simpler (to use Einstein’s words), and to help facilitate each person’s growth.
Yes, the Butterfly Model is a hugely powerful tool for me and my clients. I am also mindful that there can be no handbook for your life when it comes to the Butterfly Model, ‘There Is Another Way’ or any other book, structure or system. This is something I say on a regular basis. So I am not about to suggest this book is The Answer. But the beauty of a book like this is that you get stimulus, passion and practical ideas from a whole range of people. This new book from the Independent Thinking family of educational revolutionaries is a toolbox of ideas and approaches, which could help you on your path. ‘Bite-size wisdoms’ as one reader put it. All authors within are practitioners in some way, with years of research and experience behind (and hopefully in front of) them. Simply you can dip, dive and dine as you like.
So whatever your challenge, remember there is another way.
