Faith, in this context, is not ‘blind’ faith where you have no earlier experience, evidence or reason for believing that this person, process or possibility is going to lead to positive outcomes. Indeed, when you have had your trust in people, systems and society repeatedly betrayed being invited to engage in a challenging and risky new world requires an enormous act of faith. It is only when we have faith in any process or person do we feel comfortable in taking a step into the unknown.
Faith has to be based on trust and some previous experience of the person or process you’re being invited to engage with. Do you think that there is some possibility of success in engaging in this task, challenge or event? Unless you have some faith that there is even a remote possibility that the actions that you are going to take could lead to the results you desire then, with the best will in the world, you are never going to put your foot on that first step.
Faith is attained through the development of a pure heart (E.Q.), a flexible spirit (S.Q. and P.Q.) and an open mind (I.Q.). By focusing on creating the conditions where the seeds of these qualities can take root you will provide a foundation for yourself, and others, to take move from ‘knowing’ to ‘doing’.
I am not asking you to have faith in the Butterfly Model process blindly. The purpose of the earlier stages of the P.U.P.A.E.E. process is to acknowledge and value these three requirements of a robust faith:
- Passion - to ignite and develop a pure heart
- Understand - to engage and create a more open mind
- Plan - to try a new path that will require a flexible spirit
So, what action are you taking in faith today? Are you willing to take a brave step in this moment or do you intend to keep your feet firmly on the ground of the past? Will you deny the possibility of a more fulfilling future by insisting that you know that the outcome is guaranteed before you engage in the journey?
Have a great day.
